Why shoulder season is the actual sweet spot

April and October get overlooked because they're neither the "safe" summer booking nor the deep-discount winter one — but for a walking-heavy day, they're often the best of both. Daytime temperatures in southern Europe typically sit in a genuinely comfortable range (mid-teens to low twenties °C), well below the summer swelter that turns an afternoon walk into an endurance test.

Lisbon, Porto, and Athens are the clearest examples: all three are built around steep streets, long uphill stretches, or a lot of exposed stone — exactly the kind of walking that gets miserable at 35°C but is genuinely pleasant at 20°C.

Lisbon and Porto: hills without the July trade-off

Lisbon's hills (Alfama, Bairro Alto) are steep enough that a summer midday climb is genuinely draining — in April or October, the same climb is just a nice workout with a viewpoint at the top. Porto is even more exposed, with river-valley streets that trap heat in summer; shoulder season keeps the riverside walk pleasant end to end. It's the same trade-off we weigh whenever we're route-testing in either city — the itinerary itself doesn't change season to season, but how much you actually enjoy walking it does.

Both cities also see a real drop in tourist volume outside June–August, which shows up most in the two things that matter for a walking day: shorter waits at the popular miradouros (viewpoints) and easier outdoor-café seating.

Athens: the Acropolis without the heat exhaustion

The Acropolis and the surrounding archaeological sites offer almost no shade — a real consideration in a city where July highs regularly clear 35°C. April and October bring that down to genuinely walkable levels while keeping enough daylight and dry weather to see the whole complex plus a Plaka wander on the same day.

What to actually pack for the shift

The trade-off for shoulder season is variability, not danger — a warm afternoon and a cool morning in the same day is normal in April especially. Layers, not a heavier coat, are the right call.
